Sustainable Sunday – Shrooms!

Mushrooms
Mushrooms find their way into most of my recipes.  I simply adore them.  They add such a great flavor to so many dishes I cannot help but utilize them.  I put them in my salads, homemade pizza, pasta, vegetable dishes, eggs, sandwiches and much more.
Often when hiking in our woods I bring my camera along to snap photos as I see fit. My own personal photo walk if you will.  On one such occasion, I noticed several mushrooms along the path so I went with the mushroom theme for my photography fun.  Upon returning to the cabin, I promptly looked through all of my photos and was excited by the variety of mushrooms I had stumbled upon.
 Mushrooms
This got me thinking, could I gather wild mushrooms to add to my recipes? Every mushroom type has a unique set of qualities and tastes, so why not.  My mission now, to learn all I can about wild mushrooms.  After a small amount of research I know the importance of knowing your mushrooms and to avoid those that are poisonous.   There are many edible mushrooms that have poisonous look-a likes.  One wrong assumption and your days could be numbered or at the least your stomach could protest strongly.

I would love to end this post with a beautiful photo of a fantastic meal made from wild mushrooms but I have a lot to learn first.   For now I will leave you with a few images I made from my mushroom photo walk.  I hope to be ready to tackle the wild mushroom foraging challenge next year, armed with knowledge and a pan ready to accept the mushrooms I find along the way.

Something tells me stay away from the brightly colored ones.  Just a hunch.

Tiny little orange mushrooms, about the size of a dime.

Morels!  Yes we consumed this batch during the spring.
Do any of you out there have experience with wild mushrooms?  Any advice or tips or great resources you could suggest?  I am all ears, this mushroom loving girl is ready to learn.
