Travel Thursday – Pine Hill Nature Preserve

Pine Hills Nature Preserve

Pine Hills Nature Preserve is located about an hour and fifteen minutes west of downtown Indianapolis, IN.  Some say it could be Indiana’s best-kept secret.  Now that the entrance is located within Shades State Park that may not last.  We heard about it from a friend several years ago.  I have visited in both the summer and early spring.  With trails and flowing water throughout it makes for a great spot during the hot summer months.

In addition to cool streams to refresh, this nature preserve has a few natural features worth noting.  Honeycomb rock looks just like its name.  Make sure you check out this feature if you visit.

The Devil’s backbone is not for the faint at heart.  With sheer drop-offs on either side and a flowing stream below, watch your step and your balance.

The trail leading up to the devil’s backbone.  Quite a different perspective from down here.

In addition to the devil’s backbone, there are two others, Turkey Backbone, and Mill Cut Backbone.  Both offer nice views of the forest and stream below.

If you live in Indiana or are visiting, I recommend visiting this nature preserve.  With it’s close proximity to Shades State Park and Turkey Run State Park, there is plenty to see and do in this part of Indiana.

Please note, all state parks in Indiana have an entrance fee of $7 for residents and $9 for non-residents.  The pass is good for all of the state parks for a single day.  Plan ahead and visit both state parks and check out Pine Hills Nature Preserve all for one fee.

Also, note Pine Hills had its own entrance until recently, now it may only be accessed through Shades State Park.
