One of the most special times in a young couple’s life is their engagement period. A time when they get to know each other on a deeper level and prepare for their upcoming marriage. When I was asked to do an engagement session for Triston & Amanda, I readily accepted. Not only do I enjoy capturing this special time but this session had a deeper meaning for me. You see this session was for my son and his fiancée.
The two met in high school and got engaged two years later on a cruise. With a wedding date set for September 2018, they decided to do engagement pictures this past summer. Personally, I think they are smart to have a long engagement. Their wedding date falls on their 5 year anniversary.
They had a few locations picked out for their session. They wanted a combination of urban and country for their photos.
We started out downtown in Fountain Square. An artsy, fun district of Indianapolis. They had attended swing dancing at the historic Fountain Square Theater. We decided to start there. It was a nice way to warm them up. I find most people feel weird in front of a camera at the beginning. Although I kn0w them both well, it’s always nice to warm up and find a groove.
The groove was quickly found and away we went snapping photos at various spots around Fountain Square. They had several ideas of poses they wanted to experiment with. When we felt we had plenty in this location it was time to move on to one of my favorite downtown locations, Lockerbie Square.
Lockerbie Square is home to many beautiful and historic homes, complete with a cobblestone street in front of the James Wilcomb Riley house. The tree line streets, rot iron fences, plenty of greenery and little traffic make this location a photographer’s dream.
The kids (I will probably always call them that, even as they get older), fe1l into a groove with their love shining through. This location was perfect for them. As I was snapping pictures, a couple walked by and congratulated them on their engagement.
With daylight fading quickly, we wanted to make it to the canal before the sunset. We were having so much fun, time passed quickly. We knew then the country photos would have to wait for a later date.
Upon arrival at the canal, it was time to incorporate some of their props. They had made a sign with their wedding date they wanted to use.
As we continued snapping photos in various locations along the canal, several people smiled and congratulated them as they passed by. It was truly a magical evening for this young and sweet couple. With the last bits of sunlight left, we finished up and headed back to our car.
Although time passed before we were able to make it out to the country, we agreed upon a later date for those photos. In the end, everyone had a great time and we were all surprised 2+ hours had passed.

An engagement session gives the couple a chance to feel comfortable together in front of the camera. This makes wedding day photos a breeze. It’s especially helpful to have the same photographer do both engagement & wedding photos.
It’s a nice way for a couple to spend a relaxing afternoon celebrating their love & capturing tender moments.
