“News of the World” by Paulette Jiles

This short novel set in the 1800’s follows the travels of an older gentleman set with the task of returning a young girl to her family. I found myself becoming attached to the pair and rooting for them to make it to their destination. At 209 pages it’s a quick and easy read. With wonderful prose describing the landscape of Texas in the early 1800’s it was easy to become immersed in the story.

This novel is different from the types of books I normally read. I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy it but I found it a delight to read. The relationship that develops between the older gentleman and the young girl was the heart of this book.

If you are looking for an easy read set in a time when life was slower this is the book for you.

It’s amazing to think how long it took to get from one place to another when all they had was a horse and buggy. It was also interesting to see how a small amount of money was considered a lot back then.

Pick up this book and pour yourself a glass of wine for a nice walk back in time.
